Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) and the National Lexicography Units (NLUs) to commemorate International Dictionary Day on 15 October 2021

 

The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) will, in conjunction with the National Lexicography Units (NLUs), be conducting an International Dictionary Day commemoration virtually on 15 October 2021 under the theme ‘The Essential role of dictionaries in Language and Learning Embracing the UNESCO Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032)’. The International Dictionary Day is celebrated on October 16 in remembrance of the first American lexicographer, Noah Webster who is considered to be the father of the American dictionary.

The objectives of the webinar are to:

  • promote language use
  • encourage the use of dictionaries to improve vocabulary and literacy levels and;
  • celebrate the work of lexicographers in the compilation of dictionaries

The commemoration will be conducted virtually and live streamed on the PanSALB Facebook page.
