Local Government Elections Launch

By Marketing and Communication

On 27 May 2026, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officially launched its comprehensive communications campaign in Midrand, Gauteng, in anticipation of the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE) scheduled for 4 November 2026. The campaign is centred around the impactful tagline “Get Up, Show Up, Vote,” which serves as a strong call to action aimed at inspiring all eligible voters, with a particular emphasis on engaging young people, to take an active role in the electoral process.

To enhance voter participation, the IEC has planned a series of public awareness initiatives designed to encourage citizens to register to vote during the designated voter registration weekend on 20 and 21 June 2026. Recognising the significant influence of social media as a critical tool for mobilising young voters, the Commission has committed to leveraging these platforms effectively. However, the IEC is also aware that misinformation can spread rapidly on social media, posing a significant challenge. To tackle this issue, the Commission is set to release a draft Code of Conduct on Misinformation for public feedback. This document aims to curb the spread of fraudulent and manipulated content, ensuring that the integrity of information is upheld throughout the election period.

Moreover, the IEC’s contact centre is equipped to facilitate engagement across 11 official languages spoken in South Africa, ensuring that information and assistance are accessible to a diverse range of voters from various linguistic backgrounds.

Remember, it is crucial to “Get Up, Show Up, Vote!” Your participation matters!
