CALL FOR NOMINATIONS MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO SERVE ON NATIONAL LANGUAGE BODIES (NLBs)

The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) hereby invites members of the public, preferably associated with academic, cultural, traditional, and community-based organisations or institutions, with an interest in languages to nominate individuals to be considered for appointment to PanSALB’s National Language Bodies (NLBs) for the official languages (Sesotho sa Leboa, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, and South African Sign Language) and the Khoe and San languages.

Each NLB operates in terms of Section 8(8)(b) of the Pan South African Language Board Act (Act 59 of 1995), as amended, and PanSALB’s Norms and Rules for NLBs (Board Notice 94 of 2005, as revised).

Members will serve on a part-time basis for a period of five years from the date of appointment. There is no remuneration as this is regarded as community work. PanSALB will cover the costs related to travel and accommodation for members appointed to serve on the respective NLBs.

Suitable individuals must satisfy the following requirements:
• Be first language speakers/users of the language concerned;
• Have passion and commitment for, and contribute to, the development and use of the language concerned;
• Have specialist and extensive knowledge of the language concerned as well as expertise in any of these language domains: language standardisation, terminology development, lexicography, literature and media, translation and interpreting, language in education, and human language technology.

 

Nominations should be submitted in writing and must include the following details:
• The title, full name, addresses (physical and postal), and contact details (email and phone numbers) of the nominee, and a two-page curriculum vitae (CV) of the nominee. The CV must include the nominee’s full name, ID number, gender, contact details (email address and phone numbers), addresses (physical and postal), name of the province they reside in, membership of other professional bodies, and brief descriptions of their experience, knowledge, and skills in the relevant language and/or culture.
• Certified copies of the nominee’s ID and academic and professional qualifications.
• Any other supporting information, including names and contact details of at least two (2) referees. One of the referees must be from a language, cultural, traditional, or community-based organisation or institution.
• A duly signed one-page letter of motivation from the nominator indicating why the nominee is qualified to contribute to the development and use of the language concerned.
• A duly completed application form that must be signed by the nominator, a seconder, and the nominee.

 

No nomination will be considered unless all of the above is included.
