AFRIKAANS NATIONAL LANGUAGE BODY (ANLB) WELCOMES DECISION BY PEARSON SA TO CONTINUE ONLINE VERSION OF THE HANDWOORDEBOEK van die AFRIKAANSE TAAL
The Afrikaans National Language Body of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) takes note of Pearson SA’s announcement that it will no longer close the online version of the Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal on 4 August 2022. Firstly, we would like to express our gratitude to the various role-players in the Afrikaans language community who entered into discussions with Pearson SA in order to dissuade them from doing so. Secondly, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Pearson for agreeing to continue with the online HAT. It is encouraging to see that their users’ interests are important to Pearson and that they understand the unique linguistic situation within South Africa. We hope that this step by Pearson SA will serve as an example to other publishers. We would also like to encourage the Afrikaans language community to continue to support Afrikaans products and institutions. Lastly, as PanSALB, we request Pearson SA to further consider other South African languages in an effort to contribute to the furtherance of multilingualism and social cohesion.
Die Nasionale Taalliggaam vir Afrikaans van die Pan Suid-Afrikaanse Taalraad (PanSAT) neem kennis van Pearson SA se aankondiging dat hulle van hul plan afgesien het om die aanlyn weergawe van die Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal op 4 Augustus 2022 te sluit. Ons wil eerstens graag ons dank uitspreek aan verskeie rolspelers in die Afrikaanse taalgemeenskap wat hieroor met Pearson SA in gesprek getree het ten einde hulle tot ander insigte te bring. Tweedens wil ons ’n opregte woord van dank aan Pearson rig dat hulle ingestem het om die aanlyn HAT te laat voortbestaan. Dit is verblydend om te sien dat Pearson sy gebruikers se belange op die hart dra en begrip toon vir die unieke taalsituasie in Suid-Afrika. Ons hoop is dat hierdie stap deur Pearson SA vir ander uitgewers tot voorbeeld sal strek. Ons wil ook die Afrikaanse taalgemeenskap aanmoedig om voort te gaan om Afrikaanse produkte en instellings te ondersteun. Laastens versoek ons, as PanSAT, Pearson SA om oorweging te skenk ander Suid-Afrikaanse tale in ’n poging om tot die bevordering van veeltaligheid en sosiale kohesie by te dra.
