In recognition of the Bill of Rights at 30, PanSALB, in partnership with Institutions Supporting Democracy (ISDs), also known as Chapter 9 institutions, organised an event focused on raising awareness about linguistic justice and how to achieve it in South Africa. As a country proud of its multilingualism, with 12 official languages, it is vital to implement proactive measures to protect language rights both in policy and everyday practices. Language rights are basic human rights that ensure individuals can communicate in their preferred language and are deeply embedded in the South African Constitution, which forbids infringement upon them. At the event, ISDs representatives explained their specific mandates and emphasised their roles in strengthening democratic values. PanSALB is privileged to take part in the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa Public Participation Approach and Repositioning workshop, from 5-6 March in Cape Town. Our Acting CEO, Mr Julius Dantil delivered a presentation on “Opportunities for reaching communitiesespecially those in rural settings in respect of cultural and language access.” He urged government to leverage indigenous languages to reach rural communities.
