For the effective use of multilingualism or mother language in an album.

 

LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE CATEGORY
This award recognises both the Written and the Oral modes of linguistic and/or literary expression. It is for individuals/writers who have contributed to the promotion and preservation of all the official South African languages i.e. Sesotho sa Leboa, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenḓa, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa and isiZulu. Khoi, Nama, San, as well as South African Sign Language.

 

MEDIA CATEGORY

THETHA MASOMBUKA AWARD

The Thetha Masombuka Award will be presented to a journalist in the print and broadcast media who contributed to the promotion and preservation of his/her mother tongue and other languages including Khoi, Nama, San, as well as SA Sign Language.

 

TV/RADIO

For a TV/Radio programme that seeks to promote multilingualism or any of the 11 official languages including Khoi, Nama, San, as well as South African Sign
Language.

 

PRINT MEDIA
For a print publication that seeks to promote and preserve any of the 11 official languages including Khoi, Nama, San, as well as South African Sign Language.

 

TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS CATEGORY

For the effective innovation of technology to promote multilingualism in the technology sector, including business-to-business and consumer campaigns.

 

EDUCATION CATEGORY

Use and promotion of multilingualism in institutions of learning. This can be shown in the respective institution’s language policy, tuition material and signage in campus building/s.

 

TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING CATEGORY

For the individual who contributed to language by way of interpreting or training of interpreters and translators and /or translating seminal text for wider accessibility.

 

LANGUAGE ACTIVIST CATEGORY

For individuals who actively contribute towards the development and promotion of multilingualism or the use of mother languages through social media platforms, community development programmes and language advocacy within the corporate or government sector.

 

CHAIRPERSON’S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

This is a special award that is bestowed by the Chairperson of the Board on individuals/organisations who have excelled in the promotion and preservation of our
languages.

   
 
  CRITERIA FOR ADJUDICATION
   
 
 
  • To what extent may the nominated work be regarded as ingenious/creative at a micro or macro-linguistic level?
  • How would you rate the standard of the work?
  • To what extent is the nominated work able to stand on its own right?
  • How significant is the work to the target language community?
  • To what extent does the nominee succeed in transcending linguistic and cultural barriers?
  • To what extent does the nominee’s work make another culture/literature/history known and thereby succeed in promoting cross-linguistic/cultural understanding?
  • To what extent does the nominee’s work contribute towards promoting multilingualism and the development of the indigenous languages in South Africa?
  • How significant is the work to the South African nation as a whole in terms of nation-building and uniting the people of South Africa?
  • What is the significance of the role of and medium used by the nominee towards the promotion of multilingualism in South Africa?
